The most common exercise misconception is that effort correlates with results. This could not be further from the truth. A phrase to keep in mind is to work smarter, not harder. The body works in a set of five zones heart rate zones. Zones 1-3 are the zones where you are burning fat. In these zones, your heart rate is going from a slower to medium pace and includes activities such as weightlifting and steady state cardio. Zones 4-5 (where most people feel that they need to be exercising at) is when the heart rate is moving at an incredibly rapid pace. In this zone, your body utilizes carbohydrates for fuel as opposed to fat. For example, continuous running on a treadmill at a very fast pace is Zone 4-5. While this zone is optimal for strengthening the heart and is encouraged to utilize sparingly, this form of exercise will not assist with burning fat and often time’s leaves people frustrated with a lack of results.
Don’t eat carbs.
Carbohydrates are the enemy? False! Carbohydrates are the energy source and fuel of the body. What is the first thing you do as you set-out for a long road trip? Fill the car with gas! When it comes to exercising, your body needs carbohydrates. However, you want to be smart about your carb choices. Not all carbs are created equal. When it comes to choosing carbohydrates, it is best to choose a dense carb source such as sweet potatoes or jasmine rice. Fruit is also a smart carb choice – in moderation – as fruit contains a lot of sugar.
